2018 IECC - Commercial Provisions

The commercial energy code applies to all buildings except those defined as residential. The code applies to new construction as well as additions, alterations, renovations, repairs of existing structures, changes in space conditioning, and changes in occupancy.

For buildings with a mixed occupancy, the residential portion must comply with the residential requirements and the commercial portion must comply with the commercial requirements.

Commercial Significant Changes

  • R-5 insulation required for heated slabs

  • U-factor requirements added for garage doors with glazing less than 14%

  • Requirements for airspaces when the thermal properties are calculated as part of the wall assembly

  • Expanded lighting control requirements for interior and exterior lighting

  • Showerhead flow rate requirement added

  • Maximum on-site renewable energy cost reduction of 5% added to the Performance compliance option

  • New additional efficiency package options added
